imperfect subjunctive
This form of the subjunctive is used for subjunctive situations in the past(!) and for IF clauses when you are talking about situations that can't be true, eg if I were you (I can't be you), if I were a horse (I'm not a horse), if I were Queen (I'm not queen and not likely to be).
